Managed hosting provider upgrades Internet storage and backup capacity
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Jun. 2, 2005 – American Web Services, an Internet business solutions provider, recently added a big new addition to handle the growth in its managed server operations. Provided by iQstor Networks of Newbury Park, California, the new 2 terabyte storage array provides completely redundant storage and backup for their server clusters.
In the past, a company would install multiple hard drives into each server to provide redundant storage and then have a separate system to backup all the servers. Using the new storage system, all the hard drives are centralized in a redundant fashion and the exact amount of storage needed for each server is allocated.
In addition to adding more storage, the new system provides the ability to instantly “snapshot” data for backup. "We were getting to the point where we couldn’t swap backup tapes fast enough," said Ed Williams, Chief Technology Officer. "The new storage system allows us to immediately take a copy offline for backup to portable hard drive or to tape."
By the way, Williams says a terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, 1,000,000 megabytes, 1,000,000,000 kilobytes, or 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. For the rest of us, it’s about 10,000 feature-length movies, 200,000 high-resolution photos or 500,000 music files. Whew!
