Can Email Be Greener?

American Web offers "carbon-free" web services to assist with AB 32 compliance

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Jan. 3, 2009 – With the ever growing use of technology in our lives and business, did you ever wonder how much of an impact your email has on the environment? Many might think that email is the environmentally-friendly alternative to postal mail (and the trees do appreciate it), but few think of the rows upon rows of servers at data centers all around the world. Each of these data centers consume vast amounts of electricity, much of which is created using coal and natural gas sources.

As revealed by the sharp reporters at The Guardian UK, Google claims that each search on Google.com generates an average of 0.2g of CO2. When you multiply this by the billions of searches performed on Google, you can see why they have pursued way to power their servers with cleaner energy.

In 2008, the California Legislature passed AB 32, which requires all businesses located in California to begin to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. Now your email and web hosting can be hosted on servers that are powered from clean energy sources.

"We wanted to offer businesses in California more options for meeting their AB 32 compliance," said Ed Williams, Chief Technology Officer of American Web. "As the Obama administration and Congress explore programs such as cap-and-trade for carbon emissions, we expect to see increased interest in environmentally-friendly IT services."

American Web develops and hosts Internet solutions for hundreds of organizations, including Blue Shield of California, Gigatone Entertainment, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Hilton Hotels, and Pacific Coast Producers.
